Ride Description: This is a brand new route and it’s quirky. It should be a ton of fun and here’s what’s up with it to help put you in a “fun” mindset. The whole point of this route is to go to Cedar Key, which is about as remote and “Old Florida” as it gets. It you’re not spending some time there to have a meal or a beverage or at least slow-roll through the (two blocks of) town and take some photos, then you’re doing this ride wrong. Cedar Key is truly unique and special. And it got just devastated by Hurricane Helene two years ago and is making a comeback that we should support. But, the only way to get to Cedar Key is on US 98. It’s a fine road for cycling — it’s very low traffic and its got a decent road shoulder. However, it’s long, flat, and boring. And for those of you pacelining or drafting, the shoulder is “dirty”: think shredded tires, rocks, roadkill, tie-downs, and I even dodged a 4×4 once. Be very, very careful riding on US98. And then there’s SR24. If it’s a nice day — and let’s hope that it is — it will have traffic on it because, well, Cedar Key is awesome and we’re not the only ones going there. Be careful and if riding in groups, be mindful of keeping it close and tight so we’re being respectful of other road users. The out-bound segment from Chiefland should be great! Treasure Camp Store is also a real gem. All that said, if you’re looking to scorch it and set a 200K PR, then this is the route to do it on. It’s flat and it has few turns and you can just jam through most of it, if you want to. There you have: something for everyone. Enjoy!

Note: Although lights and reflective gear are not required — the ride starts after sunrise — you will be disqualified if you ride in low-light or dark conditions without them. Sunset is 1756. Pro tip: bring lights and reflective stuff on all brevets.
